The Change

Oh! It was the best of times,
Grandpa Joe said with a smile
When life was simple
And people were humble.

The joyful music of the birds floated everywhere
The air was pure and the trees were breathing
Nature was calm and the sights were soothing
Mother Earth was bountiful and people were content.

Though the distance between places was long
The distance to people’s hearts was short
Wickedness and deceit were unheard of
While helping and sharing were common all around.

Oh! But what about now?
It’s the worst of times, cried Grandpa Joe
The web of life has tightened
And the people have turned insolent.

The only sounds to be heard are the din of traffic
Soot and smog slowly kill all that is around
Seasons have gone astray; the fleeting of time is vexing
Drought and famine are prevalent and people are restless.

Machines and robots control people’s minds
It’s easier to reach the moon now than to touch our soul
All one hears is about war and murder
You close the doors of your heart and live in solitude.

This is indeed frightful, lamented Grandpa Joe
Perhaps this world will soon come to an end
And the best of times will be born again.
Hoping thus, Grandpa Joe nodded and dozed away.
