THE PAINTER PRINCE

Many are there silently conversing with one another
The empty hall overflows with their gentle murmur.
I see Damayanti revealing her love for Nala to the Hamsam (swan)
The love-lorn Shakuntala writing to her beloved king Dushyanta.
There are many others too: Gods, kings and even beggars
Oh, but I cannot take my eyes off from those graceful women
All beautifully clad in silk saris and brimming with life
Yes!They are the lovely images from the magnificent paintings
Of the ‘painter prince’-Raja Ravi Varma.

[Raja Ravi Varma was one of the greatest Indian painters of the 19th Century. He was born in a royal family in Kerala, India. His portraits were inspired by the popular myths and legends especially those from the Mahabharatha and the Ramayana, the two great epics of India.]

  2. Dear Susan,

    Unexpected subject from you!
To be honest, the pictures and the poem took me to Kuthiramalika Palace, Padmanabhapuram Palace etc. in split of a second.

We should appreciate the efforts of Raja Ravi Varma, when technology was nowhere to be seen!!

Great job of promoting our culture across.

    Happy Republic Day!
