Past-Present

She turned around and saw the smiling face
Of a young girl with black curly locks
Who daydreamed all day of art and adventure.
School days for her, were a dreary time
Spent in listening to boring lectures
And brooding about the dreadful problems in Math.

Now she stood in front of the college gate
Oh! What fun filled days they were, the next three years.
As she capered around with friends and art!
But for the next couple of years she turned studious
And spent them in the company of Beckett and Eliot
Lived in a ‘Glass Menagerie’ with ‘Midnight’s Children’
And grappled with Joyce and Hawthorne.

Out of it all and into the world of teaching
Now she learned more than from any institute
New roles and new responsibilities came her way
Each day passed so fast that she could just see
The seasons flitting by in the blink of an eye.
Suddenly she heard her baby’s laughter
And turned around to the present again.
