“Of all the rights of women, the greatest is to be a mother.”-Lin Yutang

When we become a mother for the first time does motherhood come instinctively to us or do we learn how to become one?

From my experience, I understood that during motherhood, a mother’s instinct, plays a very important role. No matter who else is with you, instead of teaching you ‘how to become a mother’ they have only the role of providing a great help.

When I became a mother for the first time I went through that journey of instincts, and found answers for the ‘why and when’ questions regarding my baby and savored each moment of that divine bond. When my baby was placed into my hands for the first time, instinctively I held him close to me and supported his head underneath. In the beginning, though feeding turned out to be a terrible ordeal, soon we both got accustomed to it. Soon after coming home from the hospital I realized that my old habit of having a ‘no routine’ life doesn’t exist anymore instead a routine has to be followed and that it revolved around the little one.

Gradually, a mother’s instinct made me understand why my son cried, whether he was hungry or if he was in pain, how he liked to be carried, how much he loved to listen to music, and so on. Some days he used to throw a fit and though he was only two or three months he used to stop screaming when I picked him up and held him close to me. How does a two month old baby recognize his mother from a simple touch, when she carries him? Isn’t that an amazing instinctive reaction?

My elder son is four now. This is the age when they have so much energy and when they ask at least a hundred questions each day about everything under the sky. I on the other hand sometimes go mad at his constant jabbering. But however much I get tired of his naughtiness or of his demanding nature, I enjoy each and every moment with him because each time I look at his little cherubic face I realize that it is only a matter of time, soon my baby will be a man and will fly away from this nest to build his own.

I always remember my college days with nostalgia. If anyone asks me about the best years in my life I would be ready to endlessly talk about those days. But the most beautiful, miraculous days of my life is and will always be the days since I’ve become a mother. No other phase of life can be compared with this one and I believe if at all possible, we with the divine instinct that God has gifted us should appreciate and take time to help and see our children grow.

A Happy Mother's Day to all the Mothers out there.

Love Always
Susan
