The Mermaid Dream

The waves rolled calmly
Lulling the sea animals into a deep slumber.
As the little fishes slept among the corals
They heard her singing softly.
The murmuring of the mermaid
Soothed them in their dreams.
Was she beside them?
Or was she nearly a figment of their imagination?
As every night the angels of the seabed
Drifted away to sleep,
They came under her spell.
A flash of black hair,
Luscious like the waves.
A dazzle of bright colors,
Vibrant as the faraway rainbow.
A soft sigh, and the swish of a tail
She thus floated in and out of their dreams
As they smiled and slept on
Waiting for that first ray of light
To fall on them from above.

[Have you ever seen a fish smile? Do you think they can? Perhaps the song of a mermaid can put a smile on their face:)]

I swayed to the rhythmic movement of the train.
Outside, the concrete dwellings gave way
To lonely thatched huts in the green fields.
One-legged cranes snoozed on the fields,
The coconut trees swayed in the breeze.
A gust of wind brought in the stink of damp husks.
A lone boat drifted on the distant river.
Women took a dip in the pond
To ward off the summer heat.
Men sat on river banks patiently
Silent and erect; only their eyes darted
At the fish swimming below.
Urchins with their muddy faces and pearly teeth
Laughed and waved furiously at us.
I swiftly painted the images in my head
And carefully wrapped them among the other treasures.
I can see them even now
While lazing around in my apartment
Far away, from my homeland.

The whistle of the winds,
And the rustle of the curtains
Awoke me from my slumber.
I strained my eyes in the darkness
And what did I see?
An apparition!
Moving aside the curtain of night,
It loomed above me.
Paralyzed by fear,
But overcome by curiosity
I stared at the ugly monster
And wondered if it was
The spirit of my ancestor.
Waiting for it to pounce on me,
I closed my eyes and said my prayers.
A whimpering beside me made me sit up.
I switched on the night light
And held my crying baby.
The curtain rustled again,
But the apparition had vanished.

This year’s birthday too passed by
Dear ones called and wished
Long years of happiness.
Kind words and beautiful gifts,
The companionship of loved ones,
All made my day worthwhile
To save in the archives of my memory.

Welcome, Summer

Hot, hot summer days
Tall glasses of cold lemonade,
Cheerful chunks of melon,
Luscious red strawberries,
And soothing cool ice-chips.
A wicker chair on the porch,
A book or two beside it.
Sunglasses and sun blocks
To ward off the heat.
Relaxing in my chair,
Listening to the hum
Of the bees and the birds,
Silently watching the glow of sunset
And the crimson sky above.
I dream thus to relish my time,
For summer is here,
Knocking at my door.

EXISTENCE

As ambition crawled up his soul
Life slipped through his fingers.
Worldly riches filled his mansions
Yet, only emptiness welcomed
The four walls of his mind.
All through the day
Companions and colleagues chaperoned him
Secretaries and servants waited on him.
But all through the night
His vagrant spirit wandered in solitude.
The moment when his present paused
When no more future passed by
In vain, he realized-
That TIME has slipped through
His already barren existence.

The raindrops on the fence
Do they resemble tear drops?

Or do they sparkle like diamonds?

Each gem tries to kiss the greens below it

Trickle, trickle, trickle

Slowly they merge with the leaves

The rain adorns the saplings with rich jade

On which little rubies and garnets rest

The silky breeze caresses them.

The sky dressed in a black robe

Is all set again to start the chorus showers.

The Transformation

Emptiness fills your inner chambers
The bustle of thoughts are pushed aside

Inside there is only a deep abyss.

Even among the crevices there is no space

As they too are filled with nothingness

Can you feel this void?

What does it take to clear this darkness?

TIME!

Nothing stays still for too long

Your heart dances with a surge of excitement

With the passing of each hour.

Yes, soon your thoughts will scale the heights

Just as tides rise on a full-moon day.

You are in a reverie

The empty nooks are now filled with zeal

With a zest to fulfill your dreams.

Life is love, flowing slowly

The wind outside is strong

The air is cold and icy

But still love is hanging

In every breath that is dying here.

Wednesday, April 20, 2011

I flew high up in the sky,

Travelled many miles.

I passed the mighty mountains,

The vast blue oceans,

The lush green forests,

And the dry arid lands

Choked with the empty lives of mortals.

I flapped my wings

And soared up in the air

Happy and singing –

For I was free, totally free

Like the wind that was blowing around me.

The clouds smiled at me

They knew what freedom meant.

All at once I was pulled down

My wings felt heavy on my sides

My new found happiness

Was torn away from me.

Breathless, and panting in agony,

I opened my eyes to the four walls around me

And realized that it was just a dream.

Our Little Heroes
These little heroes are tomorrows’ superheroes.
Let us shower upon them love and affection,
Teach them the lessons of kindness and gratitude
Give them such a sense of security,
That their little hearts will be strengthened
To face the storms of life.
Let us lead them through the right paths,
So that they may be filled with righteousness.
Instead of choosing the path of war and terror
Let us teach them the power of prayer and peace.
Let them learn from us to trust one another
Sacrifice and humility hold the key to serenity
We, the unknown heroes of today
Shall endeavor to bring forth through them,
The superheroes of tomorrow.

LETHARGY
Sometimes for no reason it creeps in
Everything around turns a shade of grey
Every moment feels to be dull and dreary
Without any spark of energy.
Time acts as though it has stopped
But a cursory glance at the clock reveals
That nothing has changed
Time has indeed moved on
It never stops no matter what.
Then a small voice screams from within,
Throw away this blanket of exhaustion
For each moment is precious.
This day of the year is only a guest
Who will soon bid adieu
Never to come back again.

The Color of Spring
The color white has given way to bright yellow
Just as winter has changed to spring
Yellow daffodils have bloomed
And have brought much brightness into the room.

Sunshine and laughter are filled everywhere
Along with the bursting of buds and new born leaves
Shades of yellow are present everywhere
The color brings in much hope and cheer.

They say yellow is the color of friendship
But I feel it’s the color for everyone
For the young and the old alike
It is the color of everlasting joy and warmth.

The Miracle
Tiny pearls rest on each green leaf
Were they harvested from tiny oysters?
No, watch for the miracle that follows
Soon little worms pop out of the pearls
And crawl around with stubby legs.
Always hungry for more
They start munching on the greens.
Munch, munch, munch they go
But one day they stop eating
And curl up under the leaves.
They fall into a deep sleep
Then, another miracle:
They are slowly encased in shiny cases.
Inside each chrysalis the little worms
Continue in trance their journey in time
The great Alchemist continues with His spells
And wonder of wonders!
One day all the shells split open
And out come many beautiful bright- winged creatures
They flutter and dance in the air
Surprised by the metamorphosis
Or the miracles that brought them there.
How magical His hands are
Who creates such magnificent creatures
And scatters them over the world!

Today is World Poetry Day and I dedicate this poem for all the poetry out there.

POETRY

A poem can be a little thing
A two lined couplet or a three lined haiku,
A sestet and octet combine to make a sonnet
A poem is a story, a sight, a song,
That is born within you.
It’s like an enchantress,
Who spreads her magic through words
Sometimes the lines dance around
To the tap of your feet;
Symbols and images adorn the “real” world.
Happiness makes them dance to the wind
And the rains hide the outburst of tears.
Poems, be they epic or elegy,
Ode or ghazal, in rhyme or in blank verse,
What joy it brings to sing and hear them sung.

The Great Book
There is a single great book, a thick and large one
That has changed my life’s course many a time.
My reading is incomplete, as the book is still unfinished.
Each day I go through a page with awe and wonder
And seek to comprehend the meaning of each line.
Sometimes I ruffle the pages and glance through them
Then the sounds, smell and sights of the past chapters
Pass swiftly through my mind and heart.

Innumerable plots and sub-plots make up its story
Many patrons and a few opponents make up the characters
Conflicts and crises, to the self and to others, make up the mood
But the protagonist and others, and even the plot,
Are not fully disclosed for the book is still being written.
I’m not so keen to see the book finished any time now
But that is in the hands of the Great Writer to decide
For ‘The Book of Life’ is His marvelous Creation.

You and I, my dear friend, are all part of this Big Book
All interwoven skillfully into its well-planned structure.
